THE art of ZEN ...
requires balance & harmony in ALL things.

THE art of ZEN ...
is driven by the force that drives ALL things.

ALL things are born ...
live and die - the force - IS - NO THING

and as the ZEN Master - Huang Bo - said -

Noos

NO THING is born

NO THING is destroyed

Away with your dualism

Your likes & dislikes.

Every single THING is just ONE MIND.

When you have perceived this

You will have mounted

The Chariot of the Buddhas

WHAT IS ... IS ...

Two nations divided by the SAME language ... ?

Posted on Dec 4th, 2006 by Michael : catalyst-producer Michael

The original pamplet - whose text has been reproduced in this Bodleian Library, University of Oxford 2nd edition reprint of 2004 - attracted quite a lot of attention in Britain at the time, not least because it gave an unusually direct view of how the British were seen by others.

An editorial in the London Times on July 14th 1942 suggested that it should become a best seller which - "ought to be aquired by British readers in quantities unequalled even by the many works of Edgar Wallace or Nat Gould "

Perhaps slightly tongue in cheek, the writer compared the pamplet to the works of Irving, Emerson & Hawthorne, all writers who had tried to interpret Britain to an American audience, and commented that  - "None of their august expositions has the spotlight directness of this revelation of plain common horse sense understanding of evident truths " - which no doubt rang in Ed Murrow's ears - as he flew on Allied bombing raids in Europe during the war, providing additional reports from the planes as they droned on over Europe - following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour.

President Bush in his interview with the London Times - was reported to have said that
" I am under firm instructions from my wife to pick up a copy of the pamphlet "

Good Night, And Good Luck
With a desire to report the facts and enlighten the public, the ground breaking Ed Murrow and his dedicated staff @CBS - headed by his producers Fred Friendly & Joe Wershba - defied corporate and sponsorship pressures - in a true spirit of conscious capitalism - to examine the lies and scaremongering tactics perpetratred by Senator McCarthy during his communist 'witch-hunts'.

I can think of no better way of expressing my own feelings about - the special relationship -  than to pay credit to George Clooney & Grant Heslov - for bringing us that brilliant, compelling & mesmerising epic ...

                                                                              GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK.

Discovering Japan

Japantext

" During 2001, events will be held throughout the UK - to celebrate and expand the links between Britain and Japan and introduce Japanese culture to a wide UK audience.

Britain is the main pillar of Japan's relations with Europe, and Japan lies at the centre of British policy towards the Asia Pacific region.

Japan 2001 - will develop these relations further and will also increase mutual understanding  and appreciation between the people of these two countries.

During the year of Japan 2001 over 3000 events will be held throughout the British Isles and will include not only the arts, but also education and sport.

Colourful participatory events will feature the culture of everyday modern Japan."

in Japanese calligraphy with
Rie Yanagisawa ...

which my soul-mate and I attended and experienced Japanese culture first hand - care of those at New Greenham Arts, Greenham Park, Newbury, in Berkshire.

On other occassions throughout the
year we also attended an exhibition of contemporary watercolours by members of Yoka, Bunka-Shinko-Kai  from Tokyo & ceramics by Nobuo Okawa -  & once joined traditional Japanese street musicians for an entertainment of song, dance, circus skills and a traditional Lion Dance ...

Capturing the experience of ...

Posted on Dec 10th, 2006 by Michael : catalyst-producer Michael
Shellpattern1
the CHAOTIC moment ...

Firstly   -   and maybe secondly   -  an apology is in order due to the late posting of my 5th / 6th / 7th December zBlogs - but as is often the case - as all of us @ zaadz seek to change the world - circumstances intervene in the chaos which constitutes our daily lives.

CHAOS is indeed the correct word to use because we  ALL - as individual extensions of the WHOLE are absolutely NOT in control of any one THING or combination of THINGS - in the context that the chaotic - albeit planned  according to Wolfram's NKS  -  force of NO THING -  IS what does drive EVERYTHING.

It was these very THINGS & NO THING - which I had been contemplating, deliberating & reflecting upon - in preparation of my Pearl Harbour Anniversary zBlog - which were interrupted by the organisation, execution & aftermath of a celebratory Christmas meal together for my engineering colleagues in Barnet north London,  a Tornado in north west London & the burial of Alexander Litvinenko, following his poisoning with Polonium 210.

The funeral brought together Christians, Muslims, Jews and non-believers amongst the Russian diaspora at Highgate Cemetry - and took place within a stones throw of the old soviet trade mission - with its russian intelligence operation no doubt operating out of the basement - and thus Alexander Litvinenko was laid to rest - close to Karl Marx - on a hill overlooking St Mary's Hospital where my soul-mate and I were both born some 60 years ago.

Apology thus made -please be so kind as to refer to my  "boiled beans"  blog and consider the juxtaposed web-log beauty of being able to post an event - after the event - with the benefit of hindsight - which is of course what historians have done throughout history.  Equally consider that - "there are as many versions of the same event in history as there are historians making comment on that same event" - and the corollary thereof that - "there are as many versions of HISTORY as there are HISTORIANS".

ALL thoughts of which - on this 70th anniversary of the abdication of Edward VIII - bring to mind The Daily Telegraph's TV & Radio - Channel 4 Pick of the Day comment that - "while Europe burned in the flames of the second world war many of its elite maintained a martini lifestyle in the Bahamas but the party was interrupted by one of the great, unsolved crimes of the 20th Century. Sir Harry Oakes, one of the British Empire's richest men ( a sterling billionaire in today's equivalent )  was found murdered in his bed, his body burnt and covered in feathers - a crime so lurid it knocked wartime news off the front page and exposed to the rest of the world Alfred de Marigny's statement to the former King of England - the Duke of Windsor - that he was a pimple on the arsehole of a backwater of the British Empire.

Would it not be appropriate in our  "ego transcending trip"  to consider - as individual extensions of the WHOLE - that we are just pimples as well ?

ALL conflicts in time, space & culture

Posted on Dec 7th, 2006 by Michael : catalyst-producer Michael
Boiled_beans
should be considered by us ALL in the context of the premonitions & consequences of conflict - which are best represented - illustratively - by DALI's version of "boiled beans" and Picasso's "Guernica".

As Bush & Blair discuss the future of Iraq - in apparent acknowledgement for a new approach to the situation - & debate of Donald Rumsfeld's replacement is screened live on CNN - I am reminded - on this 55th Anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour - of the conflicts of war & terrorism and particularly - BOTH Gulf  wars and their inevitably horrific consequences.

Regardless of the many theories attached to the Pearl Harbour attack - &  whether or not Winston Churchill knew of the impending assault - he was certainly delighted with the decision of the USA to join the war against Japan & its ally Germany.

Winston Churchill LIFE

Whilst I worked at Glasgow Renfrew as an Air Traffic Controller in training - Winston Churchill died and I made a remark about his statement that - "the UK & USA were two countries divided by the same language " -regardless of the fact that the messages between Churchill and The President had been "scrambled" by the American intelligence X-ray team working out of the basement of Selfridges in London.

Hail to the son of Chicago !

An older female colleague - who had lived through the war - soon put me in my place and stated that - "had Churchill not been so persistent in his efforts to get the USA to join the war effort - matters for Britain would be very different".

It has taken the wisdom of the years to realise how poignant her statement was & how much the world still owes to the USA - when still much more is being asked of her.

During 13 years of the 1970s & 80s - my family were privileged to live in a village called Tackley in Oxfordshire. All three of my children went to primary school there - where they were also taught italic handwriting - & many many happy times were enjoyed including endless walks around Blenheim Palace and a visit to Winston Churchill's grave in Bladon with its line of sight - across the rooftops of the Palace - to the Battle of Blenheim memorial column itself - and the thousands of dutch elms which were planted in remembrance of those that had died in the conflict of the battle.

Secrets of the CIA, part 1

Abrams described DALI in 1968 as - "a painter of visceral paroxysms" and described his painting "Premonition of Civil War " as - "a large human body, wriggling with arms and legs, strangling itself in delirium"  - in the context of the fact that DALI - finished the painting six months before the war in Spain began. Subsequently the inevitably horrific consequences of that war were the driving force behind Picasso's masterpiece - "Guernica"  - which became the obsession of Bob Abel in his quest to create a fully interactive televisual experience of the conflict of war utilising an Alan Kay Dynabook-like version of the painting.

BOTH of these artworks truly manifest the art of enlightened communication.

So much of DALI's work was dependent on the interconnection of pictures in picture & the multitude of interconnected perspectives which could be painted  in the mind of the viewer - as a result of "hooking into & onto" the existing  "already experienced"  connections within the viewers brain.

One such picture in picture was

GRID switch

"The Chemist of Ampurdan Looking for Absolutely  NO THING" in the lower left corner of  "Premonition of Civil War" - which brings to mind the Viennese Secession, Josef Hoffmann & his metal baskets and the idea behind the graphic used for Designers Saturday.

It is the MIND set switch - as a result of the workings of the psychology of visual perception - which facilitates the ...
ZEN-like experience of seeing the THINGS that constitute the ...
"box in the corner" one moment - and ....
in the blink of an eye - a space of NO THING the next moment - and so on and on.  Furthermore a different number of boxes IS actually "perceived" according to the MIND "set" - regardless of how many flashing dots there are at the intersection of  "white on black"

As De Bono often reminded us - NO THING is actually black or white - only a combination of one or more of the 256 shades of grey between the two polarised positions.

The finger that points at the moon ...

Posted on Dec 5th, 2006 by Michael : catalyst-producer Michael
Moon-3d
is not the moon - & indeed the finger that points @the-moon is not the moon either ...

but the tragedy of the Tulsa Race Riot  - IS - NONE the LESS

As I fell awake to the smell of lavender - due to the brightness of the full moon outside our bedroom window - then smelt the lavender and awakened - to the fact that the moon would not be FULL until 1258 later today - by which time others of the 6 billion on earth would no doubt be enjoying the experience - my awakening reminded me of of Philip Toshio Sudo's ZEN moon in his delightful little book ZEN 24/7 all zen all the time - & in turn Gautama Buddha's words - as long as my vision was not fully clear ... regarding the four enobling truths, I did not claim to have realised authentic awakening ...

Overcoming the Law of ATTrACTION which we know as gravity can be seen from multiple perspectives. When the moon spun off from the earth - following the cataclysmic collision with earth of other matter - it was its influence of gravity which no doubt caused the 'churning-up' of the oceans which in some way influenced the evolution of LIFE on earth.

As the moon moved away its influence of gravity on the earth was reduced to the point where LIFE could be sustained - but now, as always, as part of the ONE, it continues - in association with our sun, the galactic force of our own milky way,  the intergalactic forces of our universe and the  galactica.net  internetwork of intergalactic networks - to influence LIFE moment by moment.

The moon's gravitational pull is such that the lunar module only needed a 6000+ bhp engine for it to spring back into an orbit of the moon - and although the force of a Titan or shuttle launcher is now needed to spring into an orbit of the earth - a propane burner and a hot air balloon is all that is needed for us to enjoy that unique montgolfier experience of "floating on the wind" and being able to hear ALL that is spoken by those 'fixed' to the ground beneath - a truly moment by moment experience of LIFE - as GOD intended it to be  ...

as also will the coming total lunar eclipse

As the peoples of the earth contemplate ..

Posted on Dec 22nd, 2006 by Michael : catalyst-producer Michael
Apothesisdollar1
that season of the year - when one year ends and another begins - when thanksgiving is offered,  good news is rejoiced and the TIME  is celebrated - as they have done so
Year in Year out  for millennia ...

- let us all remember what Pericles established in a small city state called Athens - following the revolution of the people against tyranny, corruption, selfish sophistication, arrogance and greed.

It was he who established the first ever democracy - on which all western democracies today - are now based. A democracy which for 30 years was led by his guidance and husbandry - in nurturing and establishing a template based on direct involvement of the people - NOT one based on a representative basis - by a process of evolution following revolution  in fact.

A 1st person singular present tense version of - a democracy of the people - not a third person - thanks for the vote - NOW this is the way I'm going to govern you - type democracy.

The Age of Pericles

It was the revolution of the Athenians and their request of Pericles to return from exile - coupled with his understanding  of  the need for change  - which brought this about - & subsequently acted as the catalyst for this small insignificant city state to transform itself into a trading nation at the heart of the Mediterranean - which influenced the roman empire and all other western civilizations since.

An Art of ZEN  - INTEGRAL solution in fact - which was established by way of the Parthenon, the Acropolis & Athenian democracy -  an all inclusive impulse of the moment - as similarly created by DALI in his painting the - Apotheosis of the Dollar in the act of painting Gala - in which you can see - on the left Marcel Duchamp masquerading as Louis XIV behind a vermeerian curtain which is the invisible but monumental face of "Hermes" by Praxiteles - a multitude of references to  MIND, BODY & SPIRIT  - WARPEACELOVE  & LIFE  - &  the shadows of DALI's own religious mysticism, hallucinogenic mysticism, mysticism of gold and the mysticism of his soft watches in his interpretation of Bridget Riley's " FALL " - albeit a mirror image thereof.

As 2007 approaches - should it not now be incumbent on those @ zaadz to recognise that the initiatives of Pericles - brought back from exile by the people - provided a structure, a mechanism and a place where those that had involved themselves in revolution, must now be supplanted on a global scale by an evolution of consciousness based on the interconnected creative impulses of ALL on earth - who would participate in the establishment of a NEW global democracy at the direction of the people - which would bring together - for the first time in the history of  HOMO SAPIENS  - EVERY viewpoint, concept & context into a holistic integral whole.

Peace on earth, goodwill to all men ?

Posted on Dec 21st, 2006 by Michael : catalyst-producer Michael
Headcrop
Not in 2007 ? - says today's The Business editorial  - and in direct contrast to the tears of joy which I continue to experience each watching of  PEACE  as "IS" - which alexchua  so kindly brought to my attention - The Business editorial  goes on to say -

When it comes to burying their heads in the sand and convincing themselves that all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds, the financial markets take some beating. The year that is coming to an end was probably the worst for world peace, geopolitical stability and ultimately prosperity since 1979, the year of the Iranian Revolution. The coming year could bring further deterioration on all these fronts; but you wouldn't know it from perusing the research from most investment banks or economic forecasters. Indeed, the geopolitical risk premium on oil, commodities and equities has fallen to zero, an astonishing indictment of the financial world's ostrich tendency.

Although Mark Leonard has described the European vision as - never having aimed at establishing a single model of human progress:  it is about allowing diverse and competing cultures to live together in peace - he has more recently written,  in his introduction to - Divided world - The struggle for primacy in 2020 -

- I also recognise that the next 15 years could be affected by major discontinuities, such as the collapse of the Chinese economy or the break-up of Russia. However, the purpose of this exercise is to show the consequenses of current policy, rather than to predict the unpredictable.

The Trap What Happened to Our Dreams of Freedom (2 of 7)

Furthermore - Andrew Cohen has quite rightly said  -

" The Goal Is Not Peace " -

and goes on to say -

in an evolutionary context, the goal of the spiritual life is not peace;  it's perpetual development.

Evolutionary enlightenment is about the ecstasy that compels us to create the future. And it's not a future that's going to unfold by itself while we go back to sleep.  It's a future that we forge the hard way through direct, conscious, intentional engagement with the life-process itself.

In the context of  - Surviving the 2030 Spike  -  I would urge you ALL to read The Business editorial in FULL - and the comments posted thereto - as well as Mark Leonard's essays and Andrew Cohen's thoughts - in order that our  NEW kind of collective  @ zaadz can be realistically optimistic during the coming year - in ITS quest for THE MISSING PEACE
